Riding for new fathers' mental health

Friday 5th Apr 2024

We don't talk about men's mental health enough.

I've been an avid rider for a little over a year, although I come from a family of riders and can still remember climbing onto my Dad's legendary Yamaha XT500 aged 3.

I'm also a parental leave coach. I work with individuals and companies to help make parental leave and the process of becoming a working parent, burnout-free.

My days are filled with spreading awareness about postnatal depression and perinatal mental health issues that can affect women's wellbeing.

But fathers too are at risk of experiencing those struggles.

The increased pressures of fatherhood, more financial responsibility, changes in relationships and lifestyle, combined with a lack of sleep and an increased workload at home, may all affect a new dad's mental wellbeing. Concern about their partner is also a worry for new fathers.

38% of first-time fathers are concerned about their mental health.

Around 10% of all new fathers worldwide experience postnatal depression.

73% of dads were worried about their partner's mental health.

Men are still subjected to stigma when it comes to talking about their health, and that needs to change.

Men too should be encouraged and supported to speak up about their experiences.

That's why participating in the Gentleman's ride is a must for me.

It's a great way to combine my passion for motorcycles with my dedication to new parents' mental health.

It's a way for me to take some action, and walk the talk. Or should I say "ride" the talk?

I'm Riding for Men's Health in The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride

Tuesday 26th Mar 2024 On Sunday the 19th of May 2024, I'm riding in The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride with fellow men and women across the globe to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer and men's mental health on behalf of Movember. Men die on average 6 years earlier than women and for largely preventable reasons. The number of men that are suffering is growing, and we need to do something about that. So, before I press my tweed and polish my boots, I'm asking you to join me in raising funds and awareness for these causes by donating what you can for this meaningful cause and to help the men we love, live happier and healthier lives.
