Breaking the Silence
Wednesday 27th Mar 2024Let's face it gents, we normally do a bad job at taking care of ourselves or admitting there are health problems (physical or mental) because we like to be seen as strong and indestructable. So many events in my life have come back and proved this attitude insufficient.
A few years back, I went to see the doc because I was peeing like a 70 year old man in my late 30s. Fast forward a few appointments and I was slapped with the news that my prostate needed to be scooped out ASAP. Sparing a lot of details, let's just say I'm glad I went and took care of this challenge. Trading a few moments of embarassment and rogue squirts of pants peeing every now and then to be healthy was a no-brainer. I am thankful I was able to take care of my issues and continue to be there for my awesome wife and the best kids a guy could ask for.
Now, that is an obvious issue. What about silent injuries, silent issues that creep up and make themselves not so silent, mental health. Throughout my life I have faced significant challenges to mental health, either personal or military related that have changed who I am in totallity. Some for the better, some for the worse. The biggest step I ever made was the choice to enroll myself in recurring therapy, which i still attend weekly to this day. Teaching me how to process events, recognize my emotions, and respond in healthy ways. This is still a work in progress, but remaining dedicated to the process, dedicated to the loves of my life, and most importantly to myself, is something I now happily share with others.
We must be willing to admit there may be a problem. We must be willing to share. We must be willing to seek help. It does not make you any less of a man, it does not make you weak. It makes you the strongest person you can be for yourself, and for those you hold dearest.
Speak up. Be seen. Be healthy. Much love always.
I'm Riding for Men's Health in The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride
Tuesday 26th Mar 2024 On Sunday the 19th of May 2024, I'm riding in The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride with fellow men and women across the globe to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer and men's mental health on behalf of Movember. Men die on average 6 years earlier than women and for largely preventable reasons. The number of men that are suffering is growing, and we need to do something about that. So, before I press my tweed and polish my boots, I'm asking you to join me in raising funds and awareness for these causes by donating what you can for this meaningful cause and to help the men we love, live happier and healthier lives. My Sponsors
